State Govts Join Carbon Credit Queues

The Victorian State Government has announced the results of its stocktake into the carbon stored in public lands and forests.

According to the Government, its stocktake demonstrates there is more than 2.75 billion tonnes of CO2 or CO2 equivalent gases stored in Victoria's public lands and forests.

The Government's intention appears to be focussed on considering the ways they can access funds from carbon markets through voluntary offset programs that would operate separately from the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme.

CarbonEdge considers this an issue worthy of further consideration by business and investors because the traditionally held view has been that offset credits would have to be purchased from international sources where often the provenance of the credits and their reliability is less certain.
